Between work, school drop-offs, activities, cooking, cleaning and everything else that comes with raising children, it’s easy for parents to put themselves last. The truth is, looking after yourself isn’t selfish – it’s necessary! When parents feel rested and supported, they have more patience, energy and connection to give their children.
As educators and parents ourselves, we know that self-care doesn’t always look like a day at the spa. Sometimes it’s simply enjoying a hot coffee before the house wakes up, taking a short walk, listening to music on the drive home or sitting down for five quiet minutes after the children are in bed.
Simple self-care ideas for busy mums, dads and carers:
🩷 Wake up ten minutes earlier to enjoy a quiet cup of tea or coffee.
💙 Go for a short walk, even if it’s just around the block.
💛 Ask for help when you need it – parenting was never meant to be done alone.
🩷 Put your phone away for a little while and be present with your family and yourself.
💙 Make time for things that fill your cup, whether that’s gardening, reading, exercising or catching up with a friend.
💛 Celebrate the small wins – some days, getting everyone dressed and out the door is an achievement!
Some of our educators who are also parents often say their favourite self-care moments are sitting outside after bedtime with a cup of tea, taking a long shower without interruptions, enjoying a quiet drive home or spending a few minutes reading a book before bed.
Parenting is busy and sometimes exhausting, but looking after yourself matters too. A little bit of self-care each day can make a big difference, because when parents and carers feel their best, the whole family benefits.
