How Everyday Tasks Build Fine Motor Skills

Fine motor skills are an important part of children’s development and help them with everyday tasks such as drawing, writing, dressing themselves, using cutlery and manipulating small objects. The good news is that children don’t need expensive toys or resources to strengthen these skills. Some of the best learning opportunities can be found in everyday items!

At Aussie Adventures Child Care and Kindergarten, we love using simple resources such as lentils, beans incorporating our farm animals to create engaging and meaningful learning experiences that support children’s development through play.

Five Ways We Build Fine Motor Skills

  1. Scooping and Pouring Lentils and Beans
Children use small scoops, spoons and containers to transfer lentils and beans from one place to another. This strengthens hand muscles, coordination and control.
  2. Picking Up Small Objects
Using fingers or tongs to pick up lentils, beans or natural materials encourages the pincer grip, an important skill needed for future writing.
  3. Farm Animal Sensory Play
Children use their hands to create farm scenes, move animals through different environments and build habitats, developing dexterity and imagination at the same time.
  4. Sorting and Classifying
Grouping beans by colour, size or type and sorting farm animals into categories encourages concentration, problem-solving and hand-eye coordination.
  5. Creating Loose Parts Experiences
Combining natural materials, beans, sticks and farm animals allows children to design, build and explore while strengthening the small muscles in their hands and fingers.

Fine motor development happens naturally when children are engaged in play that interests them. By using simple everyday materials and incorporating children’s love of animals and nature, we create rich learning experiences that build confidence, independence and important life skills for the future.
