At Aussie Adventures Child Care & Kindergarten, our chick hatching and rearing program gives children the wonderful opportunity to connect with nature, animals and the environment around them in a hands-on and meaningful way.
From carefully observing the eggs in the incubator to the excitement of seeing the first little crack appear, the children are learning that caring for living things takes patience, responsibility and gentle hands. They can watch the chicks grow, learn about their needs and discover how animals depend on their environment for food, water, shelter and care. It’s a lovely way to encourage nature-based learning, environmental awareness and a genuine connection with animals right here in our childcare centre.

Our little Silkie Bantam chickens are certainly one of the cutest members of our Aussie Adventures family! With their fluffy feathers, unusual colouring and friendly personalities, Silkies are always a favourite with the children.

🐤 One of the smallest chicken breeds – Silkies are tiny compared with many other chickens, making them especially cute and cuddly-looking!
💙 Turquoise-blue earlobes – Yes, you read that correctly! Silkie chickens have beautiful blue-ish/turquoise earlobes.
☁️ That fabulous fluffy head! – The puffy feathers on top of their heads are called a crest, and they give Silkies their wonderfully fluffy appearance.
🖤 Black skin, muscles and bones! – This is one of the most fascinating things about a Silkie. Their skin and underlying tissues are naturally dark because of a genetic trait called fibromelanosis.
🛁 Dust bath champions! – Just like other chickens, Silkies love a good old dust bath! It might look like they are rolling around making a huge mess, but dust bathing is an important part of keeping their feathers clean and healthy.
🐣 From egg to chick – Our hatching program allows children to observe the incredible life cycle of a chicken and see first-hand how a chick develops and grows.
