Understanding Big Emotions

Big emotions are a very normal part of childhood. For little ones, feelings such as frustration, anger, sadness, excitement or disappointment can feel overwhelming because they are still learning how to recognise what they are feeling and what to do with it. Sometimes the tears, yelling or upset behaviour are simply a child’s way of saying, “This is too much for me right now.” Supportive relationships and calm, responsive adults help children gradually develop emotional regulation and the confidence to manage those big feelings.

A few simple things can make those moments easier:

✔️Name the feeling: “I can see you’re really frustrated.”

✔️Stay calm and close: Children often need our calm before they can find their own.

✔️Listen and acknowledge: Let them know their feelings are okay, even when the behaviour needs guidance.

✔️Give them time: Sometimes a cuddle, quiet space or simply having someone nearby is enough.

✔️Talk afterwards: When they are calm, help them understand what happened and what they might try next time.

✔️Model emotions: Children learn so much by watching how the grown-ups around them handle frustration and stress.

At Aussie Adventures Child Care and Kindergarten, we know that learning about emotions is an important part of growing up. Through everyday moments, play, friendships and caring relationships, we help children put words to their feelings, learn ways to calm their bodies and understand that even the biggest feelings will pass. Big feelings are part of little people learning to become big people — and they never have to navigate them alone 😍
